How to detoxify aluminium toxicity from the brain causing inflammation in the brain, damaging the blood-brain barrier and contributing to autism memory loss Alzheimer’s disease.

 Aluminium:
  • is toxic to the brain
  • it can make the blood-brain barrier excessively permeable inducing harmful inflammation in the brain,
  • it can over activate the immune system in a way that in some individuals may provoke autoimmunity and allergies.
Signs that you may have aluminium toxicity include:
  • brain-fog which is a common symptom of a leaky blood-brain barrier,
  • the onset of cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease,
  • multiple food and chemical sensitivities.
f you have any neurological disorder or mental health problem you could consider testing for or at least just reducing your aluminium levels by spending several months consuming silica rich water; if your aluminium test results are high see below for more complete aluminium detox treatment procedure.

Aluminium and Alzheimer’s/dementia

The evidence that aluminium can cause or increase your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is confusing, you’ll see some sightseeing aluminium does calls Alzheimer’s and at the same that’s now been disproved but when you look at the scientific evidence you have to check the dates of the studies and keep up-to-date, the studies that suggested there wasn’t a link between aluminium and Alzheimer’s now seem outdated and it appears once again that aluminium consumption is positively associated with Alzheimer’s disease; not only do recent epidemiological or observational studies show that aluminium in drinking water appears to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease[i] but furthermore there is now some direct evidence of aluminium being toxic to the brain.

Years ago for several decades it was claimed that aluminium exposure was linked to Alzheimer’s disease then this belief appeared to be overturned by subsequent studies failing to see a connection between elevated aluminium exposure and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s; however several studies conducted since 2008 have re-established the connection that increased levels of aluminium intake could increase your chances of developing Alzheimer’s. A study in 2011[ii] pointed out that some of the previous studies dismissing the connection between aluminium exposure and Alzheimer’s were misleading and were based on the flawed assumptions that aluminium could not enter the brain in sufficient levels to be toxic, also they did not take into account that aluminium can be transported across the blood-brain barrier and underestimated just how toxic aluminium can be even in small amounts, furthermore the consequences of long-term exposure were not taken into account. Aluminium is so slowly excreted that if you have elevated levels of aluminium in your drinking water it accumulates in the brain at a faster rate than you can excrete it resulting in a progressive build-up.

Indirect evidence aluminium causes Alzheimer’s disease

Drinking aluminium rich water is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s/dementia
A study in 2008 a high daily intake of aluminium from drinking water was significantly associated with an increased risk of dementia and conversely an increased intake of 10 mg/day of silica again from drinking water was associated with a reduced risk of developing dementia. Silica is a natural antagonist to aluminium understanding this actually gives us very useful and simple way to protect ourselves.

The problem with all these type of studies is that they do not prove a causal link between an increased consumption of aluminium and Alzheimer’s, they cannot prove that it was the aluminium that was causing the problem, there could be for example something else that people consuming elevated aluminium are also doing that results in the increased risk of Alzheimer’s. For this reason the findings from this type of study has to be taken lightly but when there is also direct evidence of a substance in this case aluminium being toxic this and a lot of weight to the argument and there is direct evidence that aluminium is neurotoxic and that by continuously ingesting excessive aluminium it can progressively build up in the brain and increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease[iii].

Direct evidence aluminium causes Alzheimer’s disease

Aluminium encourages the build-up of amyloid beta plaque in the brain
Elsewhere I discuss the new theory that the buildup of amyloid beta plaque is not what’s actually causing Alzheimer’s disease rather amyloid beta is produced by the brain to protect the brain from other destructive forces, in other words you see amyloid beta plaque buildup because of what’s causing Alzheimer’s disease rather than the amyloid beta is causing Alzheimer’s; either way increased intake of aluminium is associated with an increased development of amyloid beta[iv] and this is positively associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease[v].

Significantly elevated brain aluminium unequivocally found in fatal Alzheimer’s disease
A 2014 study at Keele University observed very high levels of aluminium following occupational exposure in the brain of someone who died from early-onset and highly aggressive Alzheimer’s disease[vi].

Increasing aluminium excretion by drinking silica rich water can improve cognitive performance in people with Alzheimer’s disease
Simply by drinking a litre a day of silica rich water such as Volvic or Fiji water for 12 weeks (see below) increase the excretion of aluminium in the urine and in 3 out of 15 individuals tested this resulted in clinical improvements in cognitive performance[vii]

Aluminium damages the blood-brain barrier

Aluminium makes the blood-brain barrier excessively permeable[viii] and this is a very bad thing, when the blood-brain barrier is excessively permeable or ‘leaky’ it allows molecules that should not be allowed to enter the brain to pass into the brain whereupon they may poison the brain directly and the brains immune system treats these invading molecules as if they were pathogens which activates brains immune response (the microglial cells).

The blood-brain barrier is a specialist membrane that surrounds the brain, it’s supposed to prevent toxins, bacteria and foreign proteins such as gluten from entering the brain. When the blood-brain barrier allows undesirable substances to enter the brain it can trigger inflammation that can damage key structures in the brain involved in depression, bipolar and other mental health problems; it can also cause a ‘foggy’ brain.
To find out more about how to test the health of your blood-brain barrier and fix it if it leaky see Is a Leaky Blood-Brain Barrier part of your mental health problem?

I think it’s quite possible that the damage aluminium does to the blood-brain barrier may actually account for a lot of its toxic effects to the brain, hypothetically the aluminium in a vaccination could increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier in a child to the extent that it induced sufficient inflammation in the brain to trigger or worsen an already pre-existing neurological or psychological condition.

Aluminium over activates the brains immune system

When the brains defensive microglial immune system is chronically over activated it damages delicate brain structures, aluminium has been shown to directly trigger the microglial cells of the brain[ix] and over activation of the microglial cells is positively associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease[x].

Aluminium Vaccinations Children and Autism

The FDA study found that the maximum amount of aluminum an infant could be exposed to over the first year of life would be 4.225 milligrams (mg), however federal regulations for biological products (including vaccines) only limits the amount of aluminum in individual dose of biological products, including vaccines, to not more than 0.85-1.25 mg and it’s quite possible for a child to have sufficient vaccines within the 1st year of its like to exceed 4.225 mg, the amount of aluminum in the hepatitis B vaccine given at birth for example is 0.25 mg.
The aluminum contained in vaccines is similar to that found in a liter (about 1 quart or 32 fluid ounces) of infant formula. While infants receive about 4.4 milligrams* of aluminum in the first six months of life from vaccines, they receive more than that in their diet. Breast-fed infants ingest about 7 milligrams, formula-fed infants ingest about 38 milligrams, and infants who are fed soy formula ingest almost 117 milligrams of aluminum during the first six months of life.

Aluminium is included in vaccinations because it strengthens the immune response to the vaccination and this should make the effect of the vaccination stronger and more protective against the infections it’s designed to protect you from but I think in some individuals this sends there immune system into a destructive state of hyper-drive.

Vaccinations are intended to provoke the immune system, they are a select develop inject tiny amounts of attenuated (weakened) viruses and bacteria just enough to provoke the immune system but not enough to infect the person; this provocation teaches or trains immune system how to produce a fast antibody response to the infection and aluminium is a included to increase the response of the immune system and the effectiveness of the vaccination. Even if you are anti-vaccination let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater teaching a child’s immune system how to protect the child from potentially serious infections is a good thing.

Now what I think happens and this is just my personal hypothesis is vaccinations are probably safe for most kids however if you inject a child that already has an inbuilt genetic tendency towards allergies, strong inflammatory responses and autoimmunity with a cocktail of viruses, bacteria and aluminium intended to provoke a big immune response occasionally an individual child can have their immune and inflammatory systems triggered into harmful state of hyper activity. Perhaps for some individuals the combination of the neuro-inflammation provoked by the vaccination, enhanced by aluminium combined with the neuro-toxic effects of aluminium could overwhelm some individual brains ability to protect and maintain delicate brain structures and subsequently repair them. A study in 2012 more or less suggesting the same thing as my hypothesis, it discussed the connection between fluctuations (a rapid spike) in immune activity, autoimmunity and the brain with regard to aluminium used in vaccinations and concluded that their investigation raised legitimate concerns that it should be investigated as to whether or not the use of aluminium in medicines safe in children[xi].

I saw 3 cases of children whose parents were absolutely clear that their child unequivocally changed straight after the vaccination. All 3 cases they were found to be allergic to egg protein and the vaccinations they’d been injected with were at least at that time cultured or grown on egg protein, this is or at least was a common practice. There is evidence that food proteins found in vaccines can cause the development of food allergies[xii].  If you are allergic to substance and you ingest it that’s already potentially bad enough but if you inject it directly into the bloodstream it can provoke a very severe reaction imagine coupling that with attenuated measles mumps and rubella all potentiated with a dose of aluminium; it’s not far-fetched hypothesis that occasionally and it may only be one in every so many tens or even hundreds of thousands of vaccinations this combination could result in dramatic levels of inflammation and immune overactivity in the brain with damaging consequences.

There is a substantial body of evidence showing that inflammation and autoimmunity (where the immune system attacks the body itself) in the brain can cause very long-lasting or permanent changes in the brain and act as a trigger for neurological and psychiatric conditions, for example OCD can be triggered albeit in a susceptible individual by a streptococcus infection in the throat this is known as PANDAS. Unfortunately for some reason despite the existence of clear evidence of the connection between inflammatory and immune over activation being capable of triggering neurological and psychiatric conditions it is still not widely considered in mainstream medical practice.

I don’t specialise in the treatment of autism or children however if you want to consult me just for the purposes of performing an aluminium and/or other toxic metal detoxification I’m available at my London clinic or via Skype; you can arrange for a hair or blood metal toxicity test to detect the presence of aluminium or I can arrange it for you.

Where does aluminium come from?

Children may be contaminated with aluminium from vaccinations.

Adults may be contaminated with aluminium either from the long-term consumption of water containing a high amount of aluminium and/or low amount of silica, some medicines including antacids containing aluminium, another source is industrial pollution particularly from industrial accidents.

Aluminium is one of the most abundant metals on the surface of the earth, it’s natural to be exposed to very small amounts and our bodies can excrete aluminium but only very slowly and in tiny amounts as a result it can continuously build up in people living in areas with higher levels of aluminium particularly in their drinking water.

JECFA (an international scientific expert committee administered jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organisation) has worked out maximum daily intake levels of aluminium that do not exceed our ability to excrete it and are believed to cause little or no harm of 1 mg/kg of bodyweight per week, unfortunately however many people are exposed to and ingest far higher levels than the suggested safe daily allowance resulting in a progressive accumulation and children in particular can be exposed to very excessive doses through vaccinations.

Water and food

We naturally ingest aluminium in our food however very little of the aluminium in food is absorbed is absorbed into the body and passes straight through us. We absorb more aluminium from the water we drink than from the food we eat[xiii], as already mentioned ingesting water with a high aluminium and low silica content appears to increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Aluminium is commonly used in municipal water supplies as part of the initial cleansing treatment process, there have been examples of industrial accidents resulting in high concentrations of aluminium being released into drinking water supplies, for example in 1988 in Lowermoor UK approximately 20 tonnes of aluminium sulphate was accidentally added to the wrong tank of the municipal water supply contaminating the drinking water for about 20,000 people; industrial accidents of this type are not unprecedented in Flint in the USA thousands of residents were exposed to toxic lead poisoning from their drinking water with detrimental effects on the health particularly the health of young growing brains.

If you do become a victim of an accidental exposure to aluminium you should immediately begin consuming silica rich mineral water such as Volvic and or supplementing silica along with other supplements described below to detoxify the aluminium as quickly as possible.

Aluminium in Vaccines

Many vaccines contain aluminium salts that acts as an adjuvants, strengthening and lengthening the immune response to the vaccine. Aluminium salts slow down the release of the active ingredient from the vaccine once it is injected, and stimulate the immune system to respond to the vaccine. They also absorb protein well, and stop the proteins in the vaccine sticking to the walls of a container during storage.

Children can be exposed to aluminium as it is included as an additive in many vaccinations, in the past Mercury was included in vaccinations however the inclusion of mercury in vaccinations has largely been discontinued.

The consensus of the scientific evidence does not show a statistical link between vaccinations and autism however many parents continue to be report significant changes in their child immediately following vaccinations including the onset of autistic and ADHD behaviour and there are some studies that show aluminium exposure from vaccinations is associated with the development of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).

A 2011 study concluded that there was a causal link between exposure to aluminium in vaccines and the development of ASD,[xiv] the study showed that children from countries with the highest ASD prevalence appear to have the highest exposure to aluminium from vaccines, the increase in exposure to aluminium additives in vaccinations significantly correlates with the increase in ASD prevalence in the United States observed over the last 2 decades and a significant correlation exists between the amount of aluminium administered to preschool children and the current prevalence of ASD in 7 Western countries particularly at 3-4 months of age. Scientific analysis (Hill’s criteria) of the data indicates that the correlation between aluminium and vaccines in ASD may be causal.

Although I do not specialise in the treatment of children I have been consulted by many parents of autistic children because laboratory testing has shown high levels of aluminium in their child bodies. I have to be honest and say that I have not seen any cases of autistic children make miraculous improvements following detoxification of aluminium, but I still believe it should be done as one part of an overall strategy to maximise the health and development of the child’s brain. I have seen cases of autistic children make tremendous improvements when they combined the right diet, educational programs, supplements and detoxification; it’s true that when you combine multiple things together at the same time you cannot tell exactly which treatment is doing what but that’s not the issue, the issue is improving the health of your child.

To protect your child from the aluminium in vaccinations you could supplement silica, malic acid and other protective anti-inflammatory cofactors to quickly eliminate the aluminium and combat inflammation in the brain, see below for details.

Other aluminium sources

In the past many people used to use aluminium saucepans which could release aluminium. Aluminium is used in some medications such as anti-acids, aluminium can be absorbed into the body through aluminium-containing antiperspirants and we may become poisoned with aluminium from industrial pollution.

Private Consultations
I specialise in treating brain and mental health problems using natural remedies, an important part of improving and restoring the health of the brain involves detoxifying neurotoxic metals including aluminium and repairing the blood-brain barrier which aluminium can damage.

The brain is highly repairable or neuroplastic, much more so than we used to think it was, we can regrow lost volume in the cortex and hippocampus. I developed a treatment to boost neuroplasticity by increasing the production of the brain’s natural growth stimulating protein BDNF, for this treatment to be successful it’s essential to 1st eliminate the things that are downgrading your neuroplasticity including toxic metals, imbalances in your HPA stress physiology, imbalances and deficiencies in key nutrients such as your
zinc copper ratio, omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, B12, D3 magnesium et al.

If you would like me to look into your case and work out a prescription and dosage of natural substances to stimulate the detoxification of aluminium and combat your health problems I’m available for private consultations either at my London clinic or via Skype for people that live too far away, click on the bookings tab to make an appointment.

Supplements to detoxify aluminium from your body

There are drug based aluminium detoxification treatments, but I don’t use these because they are quite harsh on the body not only stripping out aluminium but a lot of other good nutrients such as calcium from your bones at the same time. In my practice I only use natural remedies and to detoxify aluminium I 1st mobilise the aluminium with silica,

I use the same strategy to detoxify aluminium as I do with other metals:
first aluminium has to be mobilised from the tissues in which it is deposited (primarily the brain and kidneys in the case of aluminium) and then the aluminium has to bound with a chelating agent so that once it is mobilised rather than simply re-depositing elsewhere in the body it’s excreted from the body.

Many people particularly people suffering from anxiety have expressed concern to me about the mobilisation step, the concern is that you might for example dislodge a toxic metal from let’s say the liver and then redeposited it into the brain well the point is that unless you mobilise the metal you can’t remove it and it’s already in the brain and when you mobilise it whilst at the same time flooding the body with a chelating agent the net movement of the toxic metal is from where it is deposited in the tissues to the outside of the body.

Silica dislodges aluminium

To mobilise a metal you supplement the body a nutritional element (usually another mineral or metal) that competes for the same ‘position’ inside the tissues and cells in the case of aluminium the competing the competing minerals are silica and fluorine. Silica is actually oxidised silicone element and silicone is neither a metal nor a non-metal it is somewhere in between, silica is an essential nutritional element primarily involved in the formation of collagen which gives structural integrity to our tissues and involved in the formation of hair and nails, silica nutritional supplements are often sold as good for the hair and nails.

CAUTION: Upper safe limits for silica have not been established but prolonged use of silica supplements (more than 100mg) over a long period of time say 4-6 months or more could potentially lead to a toxic buildup of silica in the kidneys, you should take breaks from using high-strength silica supplements.

Fluorine consumption is controversial to say the least with some scientific studies saying there is no evidence that fluorine use in toothpastes and municipal water supplies is toxic to the brain and some studies showing it may be, unfortunately for some reason the fluoridation of municipal water supplies has taken on a conspiracy theory status which makes getting to the truth particularly on the Internet a daunting, time-consuming and almost impossible task.

In my practice I do not use anything unless I am absolutely sure of its safety and this rules out the use of fluorine as a mobilising agent against aluminium. Whilst I’m here I might as well relay the opinion of a holistic dentist I trust, they told me that there is good evidence that fluorine is genuinely protective to the enamel of the teeth and on this basis putting small amounts of fluorine entities based makes sense but you want to keep the fluorine in your mouth and not swallow it so with regard to children he suggested you only use children’s specific toothpaste that contains lower amounts of fluorine, do not allow children to use adult toothpaste that contains higher amounts of fluorine and you also train your children not to swallow toothpaste when they are cleaning their teeth.

Okay back to detoxifying aluminium within an hour or so of mobilising aluminium by consuming silica supplements you consume the binding or chelating agent which in the case of aluminium is malic acid.

Malic acid chelates or binds aluminium

Malic acid is a naturally occurring compound present in our cells and in many foods particularly apples and apple cider vinegar, it can also be bought as a nutritional supplement, (do not consume apple juice in order to try and obtain malic acid, apple juice has a horribly high GI).

In our cells malic acid is involved in the production of energy, as a supplemental natural remedy it may be appropriate for chronic fatigue syndrome due to a lack of cellular energy production rather than adrenal exhaustion, it can potentially increase energy production in our muscles and enhance athletic performance so it is often used by bodybuilders, it can also potentially help to treat fibromyalgia.

Glutathione, NAC cysteine, glycine and MSM sulphur protect against aluminium damage while you are detoxifying

When mobilising any toxic metal one should also flood the body with natural protective antioxidants particularly glutathione to protect the body as the toxic metal circulates on its way to the outside. Unfortunately glutathione supplements are expensive and not well absorbed and the better alternative is to use substances that are converted into glutathione. The amino acid NAC cysteine and glycine can increase glutathione production, they require the presence of sulphur, you may be sulphur you deficient particularly if you are vegetarian, onions and garlic should be rich in sulphur but they may not be if they are grown in sulphur deficient soil; you can buy MSM sulphur as a supplement.

Exercise also increases glutathione production use every day.

Melatonin binds to aluminium and protects against aluminium neurotoxicity

Surprisingly another one of melatonin is many health promoting effects is it binds to aluminium and also provides direct antioxidant protection against aluminium damage, melatonin supplementation is incredibly safe and numerous therapeutic benefits particularly for brain health; you can find numerous studies on the protective effect of melatonin against aluminium intoxication on PubMed[xv].

Finding the optimum dose of melatonin for yourself can be tricky, I have a page on melatonin.

Bacopa protects against aluminium

In rats the Ayurvedic herb bacopa inhibited the oxidative damage that aluminium intoxication caused in the hippocampus an area of the brain will be stored memories[xvi][xvii]; I regularly prescribe bacopa in my practice to boost regeneration in the brain (neuroplasticity) and for its dopamine enhancing antidepressant effects. If you have high aluminium combined with a leaky blood-brain barrier and depression including bipolar depression I would include bacopa in your prescription however if you have bipolar disorder before you take a dopaminergic antidepressant you need to have anti-mania countermeasures already in place see Managing Bipolar Mania without Drugs  and Dopamine Deficient Depression

How to prevent aluminium toxicity build up throughout life

If you want to protect yourself from the buildup of aluminium you can do this simply by consuming water naturally rich in silica on a regular ideally daily basis, alternatively you could supplement some silica liquid to your drinking water. Research published in 2013 showed that drinking a litre of silica rich mineral water a day for 12 weeks facilitated the removal of aluminium by the urine, in at least 3 out of 15 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease this resulted in clinically relevant improvements in cognitive performance[xviii].

The 3 best choices of water to detoxify aluminium are:

Spritzer Natural Silica Water
Spritzer the contains 55.2 mg of silica per litre and can be found online at a very reasonable price, the company distributing it are more concerned with the social responsibility of reducing aluminium toxicity than profits.

Volvic mineral water from France
Volvic contains 32 mg of silica per litre which is not as much as Fiji water but please don’t use Fiji water because it’s an un-environmental and unethical product.

Fiji water
Fiji water is perhaps the most famous high silica water, it contains 83 mg of silica per litre.

Fiji water is flown not shipped out of Fiji on aeroplanes and flying water across the Pacific is unacceptable in today’s environmentally conscious world, furthermore there are allegations that with the natural Fijian water being sold off overseas many Fijians on low income are no longer able to obtain clean water because their natural spring water has been sold off for profit nor do they benefit financially from the sale of this previously freely available natural resource.

An alternative to drinking high silica-containing waters would be to simply put a silica liquid supplement delivering about 80-90 mg of silica a day in your drinking water for example: Swisse, Ultiboost, Hair Skin Nails (Silica + Blood Orange + Vitamin C)

If you have begun to develop a noticeable decline in any of your cognitive abilities, comprehension, planning, decision-making, memory or other mental function such as remembering faces then I recommend you act immediately to treat your loss of neuroplasticity. New understandings about the brains neuroplastic ability is i.e. the brains ability to maintain, repair and regenerate its structures show that the brain is highly repairable and in 2012 a major breakthrough was made in how to combat and reverse Alzheimer’s disease at least in the early stages. Actually aluminium does not figure significantly in this breakthrough new approach however other toxic metals such as mercury do and in my clinic the laboratory tests I use analyse aluminium levels along with the other potential neuro-toxic metals.

Please help and support this site.
I’m giving you the information first instead of selling the information as an e-book and then asking you to make a donation if you feel that the information has helped you and would have been happy if you had bought it as an e-book you could buy me a couple of coffees or more :) using the PayPal Donate below Button below

Another way you could contribute to this site by helping me with the proofreading. People regularly point out that there’s a large number of errors on my site which I find quite embarrassing, but I’m quite dyslexic and I don’t notice them myself.
If you find spelling and grammatical errors in the text please email the page and paragraph of the error, I really appreciate the help.
